Bishop Peter Collins has been appointed an Ecumenical Canon at Ely Cathedral, in a first for the cathedral, which is also holding a Bible storytelling event in July through the Bible Society, and everyone is invited.
On Sunday June 25, at a Festal Evensong, Ely Cathedral installed Rev Dr Robert Mackley (pictured above on the left) as Honorary Canon of Ely Cathedral and Bishop Peter Collins (right) as Ecumenical Canon of Ely Cathedral. They are pictured with the Bishop of Ely, the Rt Rev Stephen Conway.
The Dean of Ely, the Very Rev Mark Bonney, said: “We have appointed Etheldreda Canons since 2011 and welcomed representatives from a number of Christian denominations. We have a Catholic layman as a canon, but it is the first time we have had the Bishop of East Anglia as an Etheldreda Canon. We are delighted that Bishop Peter accepted this role. He joins representatives of the Baptist and Methodist churches.”
Meanwhile the Bible Society’s Open the Book project is staging its Story Well Told event with author Bob Hartman in the cathedral on July 17 and warmly invites Catholics to attend.
Heather Land, Open the Book Regional Training and Development Officer – East Region, said: “Open the Book is a resource used across denominations, as a way to do Bible storytelling in schools. The event at Ely Cathedral is designed to inspire and increase confidence in Bible storytelling, with author Bob Hartman. It is also an event celebrating the Open the Book storytelling resource, as we have recently launched a new programme.
“We are hoping that lots of current Open the Book storytellers will attend, plus anyone who may be interested in getting involved in the future. The evening will include storytelling by Bob Hartman, plus inspirational stories about Open the Book both home and internationally, and a Q & A time. There will be networking time with tea/coffee and cake included so it should be a great time for bringing people together around Bible storytelling.”
The event is open to all and it would be great if you could pass on the information to whoever you feel is appropriate within the catholic diocese. You are very welcome to come too of course, but I understand it may be more appropriate for someone more directly involved in children’s and families work or schools work withing the diocese.
